Dummy Ticket for a Schengen Visa from India: What VFS Actually Checks

The Short Answer

You do not need a paid ticket for a Schengen visa from India. Annex II of the EU Visa Code lists a flight reservation alongside a return ticket as evidence you intend to leave, and the German Mission in India states that a booked ticket does not speed up processing. What matters is a live six-character PNR with dates matching your insurance and hotel.

Dummy Ticket for a Schengen Visa from India: What VFS Actually Checks

You do not need a paid ticket. A flight reservation carrying a real six-character PNR meets the Schengen flight requirement, because Annex II of the EU Visa Code lists a reservation on equal footing with a return or round ticket. What the consulate behind the VFS Global counter checks is whether that booking is live in an airline reservation system and whether its dates agree with the rest of your file.

Do you need a paid flight ticket for a Schengen visa from India?

No, and paying for one buys you nothing. The German Mission in India lists a flight reservation on its short-stay checklist and says in plain words that a booked flight ticket does not result in preferred processing of the application.

That single line kills an expensive piece of folk wisdom doing the rounds in Indian visa queues. Spending 70,000 rupees on a refundable fare before a decision does not move your file up the queue, and it does not soften the officer reading it.

The order that protects your money is reservation first, decision second, ticket third. We set out the arithmetic in should you buy a flight ticket before visa approval.

What does the EU Visa Code actually say about flight reservations?

Annex II of the Visa Code, under the heading covering documents that help assess your intention to leave the member states, reads "reservation of or return or round ticket". A reservation and a ticket sit there as alternatives, not as a ranking.

Article 14 frames all of this as supporting documents a consulate may require, and Annex II is described in the text as a non-exhaustive list. Each consulate publishes its own checklist inside that frame, which is why the German list and the Italian list differ in small details.

Two numbers in the Visa Code are fixed rather than negotiable. Article 15 sets minimum travel medical cover at EUR 30,000, and Article 23 gives the consulate 15 calendar days from a lodged application to decide, stretching to a maximum of 45 calendar days in individual cases.

The German Mission in India quotes 15 working days from the day your file arrives at the visa section, and warns that an application handed in at VFS needs up to two working days to reach that section. Build your reservation validity around the longer of those windows, not the shorter one.

What does VFS Global actually check at the counter?

VFS Global does not assess your reservation and it does not decide anything. Its role in India is administrative: appointments, intake, biometrics, document handling and courier return, with the consulate keeping the decision.

The counter check is mechanical. The operator confirms the checklist item is physically there, that the passenger name matches your passport, and that the printout is legible and complete.

The examination that matters happens afterwards at the visa section. A consular officer reads your reservation against your cover letter, your leave letter, your insurance certificate and your accommodation proof, and can query the PNR in the global distribution system.

What should the reservation show?

  • The passenger name exactly as it appears in your passport, surname and given names in the same form.
  • A live six-character PNR, with the reservation system named on the document.
  • Airline names and flight numbers for every leg, not just a route.
  • Dates and times for the outbound leg and the return leg.
  • The full routing, including any internal Schengen flights you plan to take.
  • Booking status, so the officer can see the record is a confirmed reservation rather than a quote.

What makes a flight reservation verifiable?

A live six-character PNR created in Amadeus, Sabre or Travelport. That record is the thing a consulate can look up, and it carries the passenger name, flight numbers, dates, routing and booking status.

A document produced by typing an itinerary into a template has no PNR behind it and no record to query. A consulate that catches one is no longer assessing your travel plans, it is assessing whether your documents are authentic, which is a far worse conversation to be in.

Our verifiable dummy ticket page lays out the fields an officer reads first, in the order they read them.

Why does the airline website say my booking was not found?

Because Manage Booking pages are built around ticket numbers. Verification of a reservation is GDS-primary: the record lives in Amadeus, Sabre or Travelport, and many airline sites surface only bookings that already carry a ticket number.

Emirates and Etihad are the usual exceptions, and their sites will often retrieve an unticketed PNR. An applicant who tests a reservation on a carrier that does not sees "booking not found", then concludes the reservation is fake when it is perfectly live.

Consulates know this, which is why the lookup path they use is the reservation system rather than a public website. Do embassies verify flight reservations through GDS walks through that path in detail.

Which documents sit alongside the flight reservation?

The reservation is one line on a longer list, and it gets read against the others rather than on its own. The core of an Indian Schengen file looks like this.

  • A passport issued within the previous 10 years, valid at least three months beyond your intended departure, with two blank pages, as Article 12 requires.
  • Travel medical insurance with minimum cover of EUR 30,000, valid for every Schengen state and the whole trip. The German Mission in India accepts Indian policies only from its approved list of insurers.
  • Proof of accommodation for every night of the stay, or an invitation from your host.
  • Bank statements and income proof showing you can fund the trip.
  • Employment, business or study proof, with a leave letter where it applies.
  • A flight reservation covering the outbound leg and the return leg.
  • The visa fee, EUR 90 for an adult and EUR 45 for a child aged six to under twelve since 11 June 2024, plus the centre service charge.

We sell one product, the flight reservation. We do not sell hotel bookings or accommodation documents, and travel insurance is arranged on request by email rather than on the site.

For the document walkthrough in full, read the Schengen visa travel plan documents checklist.

Is the requirement different at BLS International?

The document requirement does not change with the operator. VFS Global runs intake for a large share of Schengen states in India, with centres in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata, while Spain routes its Indian applications through BLS International.

Both companies run intake on behalf of a consulate, and the consulate's own checklist governs what you carry in. A BLS counter in Delhi and a VFS counter in Delhi want the same live reservation.

What does change is which consulate you apply to. Article 5 of the Visa Code points you to the state that is your sole destination, or your main destination judged by length of stay or purpose, and only where no main destination can be worked out does it point to the state whose external border you intend to cross.

So your reservation and your chosen consulate need to tell the same story. Eleven nights in Spain and two in France means Spain and BLS, whatever your cheapest flight into Paris suggests.

What mistakes cause trouble with flight reservations from India?

Dates that contradict the rest of the file

This is the commonest avoidable problem, and it has nothing to do with the reservation being unticketed. The reservation says 4 to 18 May, the insurance runs 4 to 16 May, the hotel covers 5 to 17 May, and the leave letter promises a return on the 20th.

Four documents, four stories, and an officer who now has to decide which one is true. Settle the dates once in writing, then copy them into every document instead of retyping from memory.

If a mismatch is already in with your application, visa dates that do not match your flight reservation covers the repair.

A reservation that lapses mid-review

An unticketed PNR has a validity window, and a reservation that lapsed while your file sat at the visa section is a reservation the officer cannot look up. Match the validity to the review window, not to the appointment date.

That is the whole reason the longer tiers exist. Two days covers an airline check-in or a border question, and 14 days covers an appointment plus the wait sitting behind it.

One-way reservations

Annex II frames this evidence around your intention to leave the member states, so a one-way reservation answers half the question and invites the officer to ask the other half. Add the return leg even when you are undecided about the exact date.

Multi-city trips need the internal legs too. Delhi to Paris, Paris to Rome, Rome to Delhi reads as a plan, while a single hop into Paris and silence after it does not, and our multi-city dummy ticket covers those itineraries on one PNR.

A name that does not match the passport

The PNR carries the name as it was entered, and a consulate comparing it against your passport wants the same surname and given names in the same order. Dropped middle names, initials in place of full names, and a married surname on one document beside a maiden surname on another all raise a question nobody needs.

Check the spelling on the confirmation email the minute it lands. A correction takes a message, a refusal takes another appointment.

Can a consulate refuse you over a flight reservation?

A consulate can refuse an application when it cannot establish that the documents are authentic, and a fabricated itinerary puts you in exactly that category. A live PNR in Amadeus, Sabre or Travelport takes that risk off the table, since there is a record to check.

A reservation on its own has never won a visa, and it was never meant to. It clears a checklist item and supports the intention-to-leave assessment, while your finances, your ties in India and your purpose of travel do the real work.

Treat the reservation as the spine of your itinerary. Insurance dates, hotel nights and leave dates all hang off it, so fix it first and the rest of the file lines up behind it.

How much does a dummy ticket for a Schengen visa cost from India?

There are three validity tiers: USD 13 for two days, USD 19 for seven days and USD 21 for 14 days. In rupees that is 1,199, 1,799 and 2,099, payable in rupees on our India pricing page.

Every tier is the same product, an unticketed reservation with a real six-character PNR built on Amadeus, Sabre or Travelport. The only variable is how long the record stays live.

Delivery is by email in minutes, so you can order it the week of your appointment rather than the month before. The Schengen visa dummy ticket page takes the flight details and the passenger names.

Does a flight reservation affect a two-year or five-year Schengen visa?

No. Under the cascade rules the EU adopted for Indian nationals in April 2024, a two-year multiple-entry visa becomes available once you have obtained and lawfully used two visas within the previous three years, and that is normally followed by a five-year visa where your passport has enough validity left.

The lever there is your travel history, not your paperwork. Respecting the stay you were granted on earlier visas is what earns the longer validity.

A clean reservation still helps in one way. A file with no contradictions in it gets decided on its merits, instead of on a doubt the officer had to resolve first.

What should you do next?

Settle your dates, then order a reservation that matches them to the day. Pick the validity tier that covers your appointment plus the review window behind it, and read the passenger names against your passport before you submit anything.

Order yours in rupees on the India pricing page, or start from the Schengen visa page. The PNR reaches your inbox in minutes, and it stays live for the tier you chose.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Annex II of the EU Visa Code names a reservation as acceptable evidence of your intention to leave, alongside a return or round ticket. What is not acceptable is a fabricated itinerary with no booking behind it. Our reservations carry a real six-character PNR in Amadeus, Sabre or Travelport.
VFS Global does not decide applications. Its role in India covers appointments, intake, biometrics and document handling, and the consulate makes the decision. The counter staff check that a flight reservation is present and legible, and the consular officer later reads it against your other documents.
Airline Manage Booking pages are built around ticket numbers, so many of them show only ticketed bookings. Your reservation is live in Amadeus, Sabre or Travelport even when a carrier website returns nothing. Emirates and Etihad are the usual exceptions and will often retrieve an unticketed PNR.
Long enough to cover your appointment and the review that follows it. The German Mission in India quotes 15 working days from the day a file reaches the visa section, plus up to two working days for it to get there from VFS. The 14-day tier at USD 21, or 2,099 rupees, is built for that.
Three tiers: 1,199 rupees for two days of validity, 1,799 rupees for seven days and 2,099 rupees for 14 days. In dollars that is USD 13, USD 19 and USD 21. All three are the same unticketed reservation with a real PNR, and only the validity window changes.
A return. The Visa Code frames this document around evidence that you intend to leave the Schengen area, so a one-way booking answers half the question. For a trip across several countries, include the internal legs so the routing matches the itinerary in your cover letter.
