Applying for a Schengen Visa from Dubai on a Non-UAE Passport
You apply in the UAE, not your home country. The EU Visa Code assigns your file to the consulate where you legally reside, so a Dubai residence visa means a Dubai or Abu Dhabi submission. Your passport only changes the documents inside. A return flight reservation is required, and AED 49 buys an unticketed booking with a real PNR.

If you hold an Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian, Nigerian or Jordanian passport and live in the UAE, you apply for your Schengen visa here in the Emirates, not back home. Your residence decides which consulate owns your file and which visa centre takes it, and your passport decides what goes inside the file. A return flight reservation is on the list either way, and it does not have to be a paid ticket.
Where do you apply for a Schengen visa if you live in Dubai on a non-UAE passport?
You apply to the consulate covering the UAE, because residence and not nationality sets consular competence. The EU Visa Code is explicit about it: an application "shall be examined and decided on by the consulate of the competent Member State in whose jurisdiction the applicant legally resides" (Regulation 810/2009, Article 6(1)).
So an Indian passport holder on a Dubai employment visa files in the UAE, not in Delhi or Mumbai. A Pakistani passport holder on a Sharjah residence visa does the same thing from the Emirates.
Article 6(2) leaves a narrow door open for someone who is only legally present rather than resident, and it requires you to justify why you are lodging there. On a tourist entry stamp with no Emirates ID, expect that door to be shut and expect to be told to apply in your country of residence.
The competent Member State is the one holding your main destination. If you are spending four nights in Rome and two in Paris, Italy decides. If nights are split evenly, the country you enter first takes the application.
Which visa centre handles which Schengen country in the UAE?
Most Schengen consulates in the UAE outsource submission to VFS Global, and Spain is the clear exception. Germany's mission in the UAE routes short-stay applications through VFS Global, which forwards the file to the Consulate General in Dubai within one working day (German Consulate General Dubai).
Spain runs through BLS International instead. The Spain Visa Application Centres sit in I Rise Tower, Barsha Heights (Tecom) in Dubai and Tamouh Tower on Al Reem Island in Abu Dhabi, open Monday to Friday with applications accepted until 15:00 (BLS Spain Visa UAE).
Centre assignments move, and so do the buildings. Check the destination consulate's own UAE page the week you book rather than trusting a blog, including this one, on an address.
Two more things UAE residents get wrong. Some countries assign you to Abu Dhabi or Dubai by the emirate on your residence visa, and some countries have no visa section in Dubai at all even though a submission centre sits there. Read the booking rules before you pay a service fee.
Need proof of onward travel?
A real PNR you can show the embassy or the airline from USD 13, without buying a ticket you might not use.
Does your passport change what documents you need?
Your passport changes the file, and your residence permit is what gets scrutinised hardest. The German checklist for the UAE wants a residence permit "valid at least three months from the date of expiry of the requested visa / intended end of journey", which catches a lot of people whose Emirates ID expires soon after their holiday.
The passport itself needs at least three months of validity past the visa's expiry, issue within the last 10 years, a holder signature and two blank visa pages. Carry your previous passport too if you have one with old Schengen stamps.
Then the UAE-specific layer. A no-objection letter from your employer stating position, start date, salary and approved leave dates, personal bank statements covering at least the last three months, two biometric photos no older than six months, and photocopies of the passport data page, signature page and residence permit.
Travel medical insurance has a floor set in law: minimum EUR 30,000 of cover, valid for every Schengen state and for the whole stay, with repatriation included. Credit card cover is not accepted on Germany's UAE checklist, and a policy confirmation letter is expected. We arrange insurance by email on request rather than selling it on the site, so ask us if you want it bundled with your reservation.
The fee is EUR 90 for adults and EUR 45 for children aged six to eleven, paid in dirhams at submission, after the increase that took effect on 11 June 2024. Under-sixes pay nothing. Our full travel plan document checklist walks the rest of the file.
Is a flight reservation required for a Schengen visa from Dubai?
Yes, and it is written into the Visa Code's own document list. Annex II, Section B covers documents for assessing whether you intend to leave, and item 1 reads "reservation of or return or round ticket". Article 14(1)(d) is the hook: you must supply information allowing an assessment that you will leave before the visa expires.
Note the word reservation. The regulation puts a reservation and a ticket side by side as alternatives, which is exactly why an unticketed booking satisfies the requirement. Germany's UAE checklist asks for a flight booking, not a paid-in-full ticket.
What the visa officer wants from that document is specific. Your name as it appears on your passport, a six-character PNR, real flight numbers and dates, a route in and out of the Schengen area, and a booking that holds while your file is examined.
Why not just buy the real ticket before the decision?
Because the decision window is long enough to make a paid ticket an expensive bet. Applications are decided within 15 calendar days of lodging, and that period "may be extended up to a maximum of 45 calendar days in individual cases" under Article 23.
You can lodge up to 180 days before travel, so a cheap fare bought in advance can sit unused for months before you learn the outcome. If the visa is refused, you are arguing with an airline over a non-refundable fare on top of a lost EUR 90.
There is a second trap. Consulates frequently issue dates that are narrower than what you asked for, and a paid ticket outside the granted window becomes a change fee. Read what to do when your visa dates do not match your reservation before you book anything paid.
Do you have to give fingerprints every time you apply?
Not if you gave them recently. Fingerprints already in the Visa Information System are copied across to a new application when they were first entered "less than 59 months before the date of the new application" under Article 13(3), which is just under five years.
That matters for the appointment itself. A repeat applicant inside that window can sometimes use a lighter submission route, while a first-time applicant has to attend in person at the centre to be enrolled.
The consulate can still ask for fresh prints if there is reasonable doubt about your identity. If your passport was reissued with a changed name, expect to be enrolled again.
When should you book the appointment and lodge the file?
Lodge no earlier than six months before the trip and no later than 15 calendar days before it starts, which is the window Article 9(1) sets. Seafarers on duty get nine months, and consulates can accept a later filing in justified urgent cases.
UAE appointment slots for popular Schengen countries thin out badly across the summer, so treat the appointment date as the thing you build the file around. Secure the slot first, then gather documents to that date.
Order the flight reservation last. There is no advantage to holding a booking for weeks before an appointment, and a 7-day or 14-day validity bought two days out covers submission plus any follow-up query.
How does a consulate check your flight reservation?
Verification is GDS-primary. A consular officer or the centre's document team looks the PNR up in the global distribution system that created it, which means Amadeus, Sabre or Travelport, and reads the live booking record there.
Here is the part that surprises people. Most airlines show only ticketed bookings on their own website, so a live unticketed reservation often will not appear when you type the PNR into the carrier's site. Emirates and Etihad are the usual exceptions, which matters in the UAE because those are the carriers you are likely flying.
That is a display limitation, not a dead booking. The record exists in the GDS, which is where the check actually happens. Our verifiable dummy ticket page explains what an officer sees, and how embassies verify flight reservations through GDS goes deeper on the lookup itself.
What does a dummy ticket for a Schengen visa cost in dirhams?
AED 49 for a 2-day hold, AED 69 for 7 days and AED 79 for 14 days. In dollars that is USD 13, USD 19 and USD 21. Pick the duration by how long your reservation needs to stay alive, not by price.
For a Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah submission, 7 or 14 days is the sensible choice. You want the booking live on the day the centre scans your documents and live again if the consulate asks a follow-up question a week later.
Every reservation is an unticketed booking carrying a real six-character PNR created on Amadeus, Sabre or Travelport, emailed to you in minutes. See the UAE pricing page in dirhams or the Schengen visa flight reservation page for what the document contains.
One limit worth stating plainly: we sell flight reservations only. We do not sell hotel reservations, so arrange your accommodation proof separately.
Can a flight reservation get your Schengen visa refused?
A real reservation will not, and a fabricated PDF can. The failure mode is a document that looks like a ticket but has no record behind it, because the officer's lookup returns nothing and your credibility takes the hit on an application the law already asks to judge your intent to leave.
Name mismatches are the other common cause. The passenger name on the reservation has to match your passport exactly, which for Indian, Filipino and Egyptian passports often means getting surname-first ordering and middle names right rather than using the short form you use at work.
We cover the refusal angle in detail in can a dummy ticket cause visa rejection. The short answer is that the document type is accepted and the forgery is not.
What order should you do all this in?
Work backwards from your appointment date, because that is the fixed point.
- Confirm which Member State owns your trip by counting nights, then find that consulate's UAE page.
- Check whether it uses VFS Global or BLS International, and whether your emirate sends you to Dubai or Abu Dhabi.
- Book the appointment yourself on the provider's portal, since several providers in the UAE reject bookings made by agents.
- Check your residence permit expiry against your intended return date and the three-month rule before you do anything else.
- Collect the employer letter, three months of bank statements and the EUR 30,000 insurance policy.
- Order the flight reservation 2 to 3 days before the appointment, choosing a validity that outlasts the submission date.
- Buy the paid ticket only after the visa is in your passport and you have read the granted dates.
That sequence keeps your money out of the risky part of the process. Ready to sort the flight document, start on the dirham pricing page and have the PNR in your inbox before your appointment.
