Flight Reservation for a Visa on a Nigerian Passport: What to Submit
Submit an unticketed flight reservation carrying a real six-character PNR, not a paid ticket. The Schengen Visa Code lists a reservation of a return or round ticket as evidence of intent to leave, and UK, US and Canadian visitor applications do not require a purchase. Buy the flight once the visa is issued.

Submit an unticketed flight reservation that carries a real six-character PNR, and pay for the actual ticket only after the decision lands. Schengen rules name a "reservation of or return or round ticket" as acceptable evidence of your intention to leave, and UK, US and Canadian visitor applications do not ask you to buy a ticket at all. Buying first just ties your money up while a file sits in a queue.
This guide is for Nigerian passport holders filing in Lagos or Abuja. It covers what the flight requirement actually says, how a reservation is checked, and what to hand in alongside it.
What does a visa application on a Nigerian passport actually ask for on flights?
It asks you to show a planned route and a reason to come back, not a paid receipt. Officers are assessing two separate things: that your trip has a shape, and that you intend to leave at the end of it. A reservation showing dated outbound and return segments answers both.
Nothing in the main visitor routes requires proof of purchase. What differs between countries is how much weight they give the flight document, and whether they want to see it at all. Get that distinction right and you stop buying documents you do not need.
The practical read is that you file a reservation, keep the confirmation, and leave the purchase until the passport comes back. That is what a flight reservation for a visa application exists to do.
Why submit a reservation rather than a purchased ticket?
Because the decision is out of your hands and the fare is not. Appointment waits and processing times vary by country and by season, so the gap between booking and travelling can be weeks or months. A paid ticket inside that gap is money sitting at risk of a change fee, a fare rule you did not read, or a refund you have to chase.
A reservation holds the same flight details in the same airline system without the payment. If the visa is issued you buy the flight you actually want, on the dates that now suit you. If it is refused or delayed you have lost nothing but the price of the document.
There is a second reason. Plans change during processing, and an application whose flight dates no longer match its cover letter looks careless. A cheap reservation can be reissued for new dates; a paid non-refundable fare cannot.
Need proof of onward travel?
A real PNR you can show the embassy or the airline from USD 13, without buying a ticket you might not use.
What does the Schengen Visa Code say about a flight reservation?
The Visa Code lists a reservation as an alternative to a ticket, in plain words. Annex II of Regulation 810/2009 sets out a non-exhaustive list of supporting documents, and under the heading covering an applicant's intention to leave the Schengen area it names "reservation of or return or round ticket" (Annex II, Visa Code).
The same annex, for tourism and private visits, asks for documents relating to the itinerary, giving confirmation of a booked organised trip and tickets for an onward journey as examples. Article 14 of the Code is the rule that requires supporting documents in the first place, and its own text speaks about documents indicating the purpose of the journey and means of subsistence for the return, not about buying flights.
So the booking requirement is about evidence of travel plans and departure, which a live reservation supplies. Our page on flight reservations for Schengen visa applications goes through the dates and routing that keep a file consistent. Individual consulates and their outsourced centres publish their own checklists, so read the one for the country you are applying to.
Where do Nigerian applicants file Schengen, UK and US applications?
All three run through outsourced centres or a single consular post, mostly in Lagos and Abuja. For Schengen applications the routing depends on your state of residence. The Dutch government, for example, tells applicants in the FCT and a list of mostly northern states to apply at the Belgian application centre of TLScontact in Abuja, and applicants in other states to apply at the French application centre of TLScontact in Lagos (Netherlands Worldwide).
Other Schengen states use their own arrangements. Italy's consulate in Lagos says applications must be submitted through TLScontact, which has submission offices in both Lagos and Abuja, by appointment booked in advance. Germany moved its Nigerian collection points to VFS Global centres.
UK applications are taken at VFS Global visa application centres in Abuja and in Lagos, with the Lagos service split across Ikeja and Victoria Island. For the US, the mission announced in 2026 that routine visa services run through the Consulate General in Lagos rather than the embassy in Abuja, so check the mission's current notice before you plan dates around an appointment.
Does a UK Standard Visitor application need a flight booking?
No, and the Home Office says a flight booking is one of the weaker documents you can send. Its guide to supporting documents lists "flight bookings (unless transiting)" among document types that are less useful as evidence, alongside hotel bookings and travel insurance (GOV.UK).
What the same guide does require is evidence that you are coming to do a permitted activity, that you will leave at the end of your visit, that you can support yourself for the trip, and that you can pay for your return or onward journey. Those four tests are met with employment and income evidence, bank statements, and documents tying you to Nigeria, not with a flight.
The exception is transit. For a transit application the guide asks for evidence that your outward journey from the UK has been confirmed, which is exactly where a reservation with a verifiable PNR earns its keep.
What do US and Canadian applications expect?
Neither asks you to buy a ticket for a visitor application. A US nonimmigrant application runs on the DS-160 and the interview, where you answer questions about your intended dates and purpose. An itinerary is something you may be asked about rather than a fixed item on a checklist, so submit what the consular officer asks for and nothing invented.
Canada's own guide for a visitor visa asks for your planned dates and your available funds, and does not list a ticket or itinerary among the required documents. The one place it does ask for travel details is a transit visa, where it says you must provide specific evidence of your travel itinerary from your transportation company or travel agent (IRCC Guide 5256).
For both countries, the sensible pattern is the same one the Schengen rules spell out. Show the trip you plan to take with a reservation, keep your finances and your reason for returning well documented, and buy the flight once you hold the visa.
How does an embassy or airline check a flight reservation?
Checks are made in the global distribution systems, Amadeus, Sabre and Travelport, where the booking lives. Someone with access retrieves the six-character PNR and sees the passenger name, the flight numbers, the dates and the booking status. That lookup is the check that matters, and it is why the PNR has to be real rather than a picture of one.
Airline websites are a weaker test. Most carriers display only ticketed bookings in their own manage-booking tools, so a live unticketed reservation often will not appear there. Emirates and Etihad are the usual exceptions, and a reservation on one of those carriers can frequently be pulled up on the airline's own site.
That difference catches people out. A reservation that is perfectly valid in the GDS can return nothing on an airline page, which is a limit of the airline's public tool rather than a sign of a bad booking. We cover how the lookup works in our guide to GDS verification, and we build every booking to be checkable, which is the point of a verifiable flight reservation.
What makes a flight reservation unsafe to submit?
Anything that is not a real booking in a real system. A PDF edited to look like a confirmation, a screenshot with a changed name, or a free generator producing an invented record locator are all documents that fail the first lookup. Submitting one is a misrepresentation, and that is a far worse problem than an incomplete file.
Expired reservations are the quieter failure. A booking held for two days and submitted three weeks later retrieves as cancelled, which reads as an attempt to pass off something dead. Match the hold period to when the file will actually be looked at.
The other trap is inconsistency. Flight dates that disagree with your cover letter, your leave approval, or your stated purpose give an officer a reason to doubt the whole application. We go through what goes wrong in why free dummy tickets are dangerous and in what happens if you submit a fake flight ticket.
What should you submit alongside the reservation?
Build the file around your reason for returning to Nigeria, because that is the part officers weigh most. Employment evidence, payslips, company registration if you run a business, property documents, school enrolment for children, and bank statements that match the income you have declared all speak to that. The flight reservation is one line in that story, not the story.
Keep the documents consistent with each other. If your reservation says you fly on the 14th, your leave letter and your accommodation arrangements should say the same, and your stated funds should cover the trip you have described.
Check the current checklist for your specific destination and centre before you submit. Requirements move, outsourced partners change, and the published checklist for your consulate is the only list that counts on the day.
What does a flight reservation cost and how quickly does it arrive?
Dummy Ticket 365 charges USD 13 for a two-day hold, USD 19 for seven days and USD 21 for fourteen days. In naira that is NGN 17,500, NGN 25,500 and NGN 28,000. Each booking is created in Amadeus, Sabre or Travelport and emailed to you with its six-character PNR, usually within minutes.
Pick the hold length by when the booking will be looked at, not by price. If your appointment is three weeks out, the fourteen-day option covers the submission window better than a two-day hold that lapses before anyone opens your file.
We sell flight reservations only. We do not sell hotel reservations, and travel insurance is arranged by email on request. If a visa refusal is on your mind, read whether a dummy ticket can cause a visa rejection before you submit anything.
What should you do after the decision?
Buy the real ticket as soon as the visa is issued, then travel on the dates in the visa. A reservation is not a ticket and will not board you, so treat the purchase as the next step rather than an optional one. Airlines also check onward or return travel at check-in, and a ticketed booking settles that.
If the application is refused, nothing needs cancelling. The hold simply expires and you have not paid for a flight you cannot take, which is the whole reason to file a reservation in the first place. When you reapply, order a fresh reservation for the new dates and keep the rest of the file aligned with it.
